Mechanical Designer – Houston

SUMMARY:

As a member of the engineering design team, the Mechanical Designer will assist in designing cooling, heating, and ventilation systems for hospitals, offices, schools, and other facilities. These properly designed systems keep people safe, provide proper conditioning for critical areas and operations, and minimize facility energy consumption. Specifically, this role supports the design development, production, and delivery of engineering documents relating to facility HVAC and associated systems. The Mechanical Designer creates mechanical drawings using Revit and coordinates with the design team using Building Information Modeling (BIM). Responsibilities include learning and developing skills relating to load calculations, system design, equipment selection, vendor coordination, and construction administration (CA) support. This position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma required. Bachelor of Science in Engineering preferred.
  • 0-1 years of mechanical drafting and/or design experience from concept to client delivery in HVAC Design, Building Mechanical Systems, and Central Utility Plants.
  • Interest in designing cooling, heating, and ventilation systems for different facilities.
  • Basic understanding engineering ethics, principals, and practices.
  • Familiarity with Revit and BIM preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of plans, sections diagrams and equipment schedules, and drawings.
  • Willingness to visit project sites to support the construction of the system designs.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and modifies Revit models of mechanical systems and components including piping diagrams, HVAC distribution, equipment schedules, and control diagrams according to established standards and Revit modeling techniques with guidance from the Project Engineer.
  • Checks model for design interferences with other building elements and resolves conflicts.
  • Produces equipment descriptions and details making changes and adjustments as necessary with input from the senior engineering team.
  • Sizes base mechanical systems including pipe sizing, duct sizing, pressure drop calculations.
  • Selects simple equipment using results of design calculations, such as VAV terminals, fan coil units, air handlers, and pumps.
  • Visits project sites during construction administration to conduct quality, progress, and compliance review with design documents.
  • Actively seeks new knowledge and training related to engineering practices, principles, and regulation changes.
